Cadair Idris via Minffordd Path
Cadair Idris is a mountain range located in Gwynedd, Wales, and is popular with hikers due to its rugged beauty and stunning views.
There are several trails that lead up to the summit, but one of my favourite mountain walks in North Wales is the Minffordd Path up Cadair Idris.
This is one of the most challenging and rewarding routes to the top.

The Minffordd Path
Cadair Idris via the Minffordd Path is a circular route that takes hikers up and around the mountain, offering incredible views of the surrounding landscapes.
The trail is approximately 6 miles long and takes around 4-5 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level and pace.
As one of the best walks in North Wales, this is a hike that should be on everyone’s adventure bucket list!
Cadair Idris Route (via Minffordd Path)
The trail begins at the Cadair Idris car park, where you will find a signposted path leading up towards the mountain.
The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, through picturesque woodland, allowing you to warm up and take in the beautiful scenery around you.
The landscape will open up as the path gets steeper, keeping the river on your right.
Continue straight along the path as you pass a bridge on the right.
After approximately 2 miles, you will reach a fork in the path, with one route leading right up to Llyn Cau and the other continuing left along the Minffordd Path.
If you have time, it's worth taking the detour up to Llyn Cau, a stunning glacial lake located in a natural amphitheater - a perfect picnic spot!
Continuing along the Minffordd Path, the trail becomes steeper, and the terrain rougher, as you climb towards the summit.
The path is clearly marked with cairns as you continue climbing, with views of Snowdonia on your left, until you reach the summit of Craig Cau.
Cross the stile on the fence and follow the path right, along the cliff edge.
As you near the summit, you will come across a steep and rocky section known as the 'zig-zags.' This section requires some scrambling, but the reward is well worth it, as you will be greeted with panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.
After the zig-zags, the path levels out, and you will reach the summit of Cadair Idris, which stands at 893 meters (2,930 feet).
From here, you can enjoy stunning views of Snowdonia National Park, Cardigan Bay, and the Cambrian Mountains.
The descent follows the same path back down the mountain, so take care on the steep sections and ensure you have enough time to make it back to the car park before dark.

Getting There and Parking
The starting point for the Minffordd Path is located at the Cadair Idris car park, which is situated just off the A487 road between Dolgellau and Machynlleth.
The car park can get busy, especially during the summer months, so it's advisable to arrive early to secure a spot.
