14 Epic Things to do in New Zealand
Travelling New Zealand was one of the best experiences of my life! This country is an adventure lover's paradise.
Jonny and I spent 60 days exploring the North and South Island in our trusty campervan - Colin!
There was so much to see and do, from breathtaking natural wonders to adrenaline-pumping activities.
Keep reading to discover some of my favourite things to do in New Zealand…
Enjoy a Boat Trip on Milford Sound
Located in the Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound is one of the most stunning natural wonders in New Zealand.
We took a cruise along the fjord and admired the towering waterfalls and dramatic cliffs.
Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like dolphins, seals, and even penguins!
A truly breathtaking experience.
Complete the Tongariro Alpine Crossing
This 19.4 km hike is one of the most popular and challenging hikes in New Zealand. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing takes you through the spectacular volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park.
The views of the Emerald Lakes and Mt. Ngauruhoe (also known as Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings) are simply breathtaking.
We absolutely loved it! I was there for the unbelievable views and landscape - Jonny was there for all the LOTR references! He basically quoted the trilogy from start to finish (lucky me).
We even added on an extra 2 hours to our walk, by hiking to the summit of Mount Tongariro - which was well worth it for amazing views of ‘Mount Doom’!
Skydive over Lake Taupo
Ok, so this was something I never thought I’d actually do.
But for the ultimate adrenaline rush, skydiving over New Zealand's stunning landscape is a must-do.
It’s a feeling like no other!
Jonny and I skydived over Lake Taupo - a once in a lifetime experience that I’ll never forget.
We experienced views of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and turquoise lakes as we fell through the sky.
Side note: I did cry all morning because I was so scared. But then absolutely loved it! However, I do not feel the need to ever do it again! 😂
Go Wine Tasting in Marlborough
New Zealand is known for its award-winning wines, especially its Sauvignon Blanc.
I highly recommend that you take a tour of one of the many vineyards in Marlborough or Central Otago and sample some of the best wines the country has to offer.
We drank our way through the beautiful Marlborough region.
And when I say we … I mean me!
As we were driving around in Colin the Camper, Jonny was the designated driver. Which meant that I had to wine taste for the both of us! (The day is a little hazy…)
Visit Queenstown
Known as the adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown is a must-visit destination for adrenaline junkies and nature lovers!
From bungee jumping to skiing to jet boating, there's no shortage of heart-pumping activities to enjoy.
If you’re heading to Queenstown then a visit to Fergburger is a must - a popular burger joint in the heart of the town.
We loved spending a few days here, exploring the town and admiring the views.
We happened to be here for St Patrick’s Day - which was a great experience. The atmosphere was electric.
Hike to Lake Marian
This was one of my favourite things we did in New Zealand!
Located near Milford Sound, the hike to Lake Marian is a hidden gem that's well worth the effort.
The trail takes you through lush rainforest, past cascading waterfalls, and up to the stunning glacial lake surrounded by mountains.
If you fancy a dip (like my crazy husband) - be warned. The water is FREEZING!
Explore Hobbiton
Lord of the Rings fans will love visiting Hobbiton, the movie set for the Shire.
We were like kids in a candy store!
We started off at The Shire’s Rest Cafe and enjoyed ‘Elevensees’ and ‘Second Breakfast’ before boarding the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour Bus.
We enjoyed a guided tour of the Hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and other iconic locations from the films.
I must admit - it was pretty epic!
Visit Rotorua
This geothermal wonderland is a must-visit destination in New Zealand.
Explore the bubbling mud pools, hot springs, and geysers, and learn all about Maori culture and the history of the area.
After a day exploring the hot springs, we had an amazing night at the Mitai Mauri Village. We tasted traditional cuisine and Jonny even learnt how to do the Haka!
Walk in Abel Tasman National Park
With its golden beaches, turquoise waters, and lush forest, Abel Tasman is one of the most beautiful national parks in New Zealand.
Take a kayak or boat tour to explore the coastline and spot wildlife like seals and dolphins.
We took a water taxi along the coast via ‘split apple rock’ to Anchorage Point.
From here, we hiked the 13km back along the Abel Tasman Coast Track back to the park entrance. We walked alongside the beautiful coastline, passing mesmerising waterfalls and enchanting forests.
This was definitely one of my favourite days in New Zealand!
Ride to Waiheke Island
Just a short ferry ride from Auckland, Waiheke Island is a paradise for foodies and wine lovers.
We explored the island's many vineyards, olive groves, and restaurants, and took in the stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf.
Definitely worth a visit if you’re staying in Auckland.
Hike the Foothills of Mount Cook
New Zealand's highest peak is a must-visit for any nature lover.
Take a guided tour or hike through the stunning alpine scenery, or enjoy stargazing in one of the world's darkest skies.
We stayed at Mount Cook Village and spent a couple of days exploring the local trails around the base of Mount Cook and Mount Sefton.
My favourite was a three hour hike through the Hunter Valley to Hooker Lake, with incredible views of the mighty Mount Cook.
Experience Lake Tekapo
This stunning glacial lake is famous for its bright turquoise waters and stunning mountain views.
Take a dip in the hot springs, hike to the summit of Mount John Observatory, or simply relax and take in the views.
We did all three! And loved it.
We ended up spending the night parked up at Lake Pukaki, just 15 minutes from Lake Tekapo. And what a spot!
We watched a glorious sunset turn the sky all the colours of the rainbow. Before waking up to views of the aqua blue lake, with Mount Cook in the background.
Franz Josef Glacier
So, I didn’t actually get to experience Franz Josef - as I was ill that day and we didn’t want to fall behind schedule on our campervan adventure.
But Jonny walked to the glacier and back to capture a photo for me!
Located on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, Franz Josef Glacier is a stunning natural wonder that's accessible by helicopter or hiking.
Take a guided tour of the glacier or simply admire it from a distance.
That Wanaka Tree
One of the most instagramable spots in New Zealand.
Located in Lake Wanaka, New Zealand, this lone willow tree has become an iconic tourist attraction.
People flock to the lake from far and wide just to snap a photo with this photogenic little fella.
You'll find countless pictures of people taking selfies and doing yoga poses in front of the iconic Wanaka Tree.
So there we have it. My favourite things to do in New Zealand!
