The Route.

The Chester Walls Walk offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Chester's past. Stretching almost 2 miles, the well-preserved city walls take you on a journey through time, offering panoramic views of the cityscape and glimpses into its historical landmarks.

  1. Start at Pepper Street

Begin your two-mile walk by taking the steps on Pepper Street up to the Chester Walls, turning left. The Chester City Walls are as wide as a modern pavement. Continue along the walls in an anti-clockwise direction.

  2. East Gate

At East Gate, admire the Victorian clock commemorating Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1897. Enjoy panoramic views of Chester, particularly down Eastgate Street, showcasing a mix of architectural styles from Gothic to neoclassical.

  3. Cathedral and Abbey Grounds

Continue along the walls and pass by the cathedral and old abbey grounds - an impressive sight and fantastic photo op!

  4. Charles I Tower

Reach a round tower, as the walls turn north, named after King Charles I - where he is said to have watched the Battle of Rowton Moor in 1645.

  5. Shropshire Union Canal

Follow the walls parallel to the Shropshire Union Canal, noting the deep cut into the sandstone on which Chester was built.

  6. Goblin Tower (Pemberton’s Parlour)

Encounter an eighteenth-century round tower with stone seating, locally known as Pemberton’s Parlour, with a history tied to a mayor of Chester.

  7. Roodee Racecourse

As you continue to walk along Chester Walls, enjoy a magnificent view of the Roodee Racecourse, once Britain's largest port in Roman times. You’ll also have great views of The Grosvenor Bridge, opened in 1832 by Queen Victoria's mother. It was once the longest single-span arch bridge in the world!

  8. Chester Castle

After the Racecourse, you’ll reach Chester Castle, overlooking the River Dee. The castle features a Norman tower, medieval stronghold, and neoclassical buildings housing the military museum and Crown Courts.

  9. Old Dee Bridge

Pass Castle Drive and the University’s Riverside complex before reaching Old Dee Bridge, dating back to 1387, with remains of a Roman temple to Minerva.

  10. Bridge Gate

Approach Bridge Gate, where the wall briefly disappears before resuming its path at Old Dee Bridge. In medieval times, relations between Chester and Welsh neighbours were strained, allowing the killing of a Welshman found within the city! Apparently this law has never been repealed!

  11. Roman Amphitheatre

As you near Peppergate, explore the eleventh-century Church of St John the Baptist and catch a glimpse of the largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain, partially excavated due to preservation concerns.

  12. Time to Shop!

Conclude your walk, having circled the city walls, and venture into the centre to further explore Chester's rich history (and perhaps do a bit of shopping!).
