Top Nine Family Walks in Cheshire

Cheshire is a county that is blessed with some of the most picturesque countryside in England and an abundance of family friendly walks.

And I’m lucky enough to call this place home!

As a new mum, my priorities have changed when looking for walks. Rather than challenging hikes - I’m looking for family friendly walks to enjoy with my bubba.

If you're looking for a fun and healthy way to explore the great outdoors with your loved ones, then Cheshire has plenty of options for you.

Here are nine of my favourite family walks in Cheshire that are perfect for all ages.

  1. Delamere Forest

Delamere Forest is a fantastic place for a family walk - and one of my favourite pram-friendly routes in Cheshire.

With over 950 hectares of enchanting woodland to explore, there are plenty of trails to choose from, ranging from easy strolls that you can enjoy with a pushchair, to more challenging routes. My favourite route is The Blakemere Trail - an easy 6km circular route which is perfect for families!

Delamere Forest also has a visitor centre, which is a great place to start your walk. Here, you can pick up a map and get some advice on which trail to take.

There are also plenty of picnic areas, a play area for children, and a café for refreshments.

2. Tatton Park

Views of Tatton Park

Tatton Park is a wonderful place to explore with your family, and there are plenty of child-friendly walks to choose from.

One of my favourite strolls is the Deer Park Walk, which takes you through beautiful woodlands and past the park's resident deer herd.

You can also take a stroll around the stunning Japanese Garden, which is filled with exotic plants and calming water features.

For those with younger children, the Fairy Trail is a magical adventure that's sure to capture their imaginations.

And if you're looking for a longer walk, the Tatton Mere and Knutsford Moor Walk takes you through open meadows and along the tranquil Mere.

Whatever walk you choose, make sure to bring plenty of snacks and water, and take your time to soak up the beauty of Tatton Park with your loved ones. Enjoy!

3. Marbury Country Park

Located near the village of Comberbach, Marbury Country Park is a fantastic place for a family walk in Cheshire.

With over 100 acres of woodlands, parkland and gardens to explore, you're sure to find something to suit all ages.

The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies and dragonflies, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled.

There's also a large play area for kids, as well as picnic areas, so you can make a day of it.

4. Chester City Walls

For a bit of history and culture, take a walk around the Chester City Walls, one of my favourite circular walks around Chester.

Built by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago, the walls are a fascinating relic of the past. As you walk along the walls, you'll be treated to stunning views of the city, and you can stop off at various landmarks, such as the Eastgate Clock and the Roman Amphitheatre.

The walk is around two miles long, so it's manageable for little legs.

5. Bickerton Hill

Located in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, Bickerton Hill is a great place to get some fresh air and exercise.

The walk takes you up to the summit of the hill, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

There’s plenty of wildlife to spot, including rabbits, deer and foxes.

The walk is around three miles long, so it's suitable for families with older children.

6. Tegg's Nose Country Park

Tegg's Nose Country Park is another great option for a family walk. The park is located near the town of Macclesfield and has a range of easy and moderate trails to choose from.

One of my favourite parts of the park is the view from the top of Tegg's Nose Hill, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

There is also a visitor centre, picnic areas, and a cafe. A great day out for the whole family!

7. The Sandstone Trail

The Sandstone Trail is a long-distance path that runs through Cheshire, from Frodsham to Whitchurch.

While the entire trail is over 30 miles long, there are plenty of shorter sections that are perfect for a family walk.

My favourite walk is the section between Beeston Castle and Peckforton Castle, which is around 4 miles long and offers stunning views of the Cheshire countryside. Or why not take on the Bickerton Hill Circular Walk? A family-friendly circular route offering incredible views of The Peckforton Hills.

Pop into The Pheasant Inn after your walk for a delicious Sunday Roast or warming chilli con carne - they have a great kids menu too!

8. The Middlewood Way

The Middlewood Way is a disused railway line that has been converted into a walking and cycling path.

The path runs between Marple and Macclesfield and is around 11 miles long.

While the entire route may be too long for younger children, there are plenty of shorter sections that are ideal for a wholesome family walk.

The path is flat and easy to navigate, making it ideal for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

9. The Anderton Boat Lift

The Anderton Boat Lift is a unique attraction that offers a family walk with a difference.

The boat lift is a hydraulic lift that was built in 1875 to transport boats between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal.

Today, the lift has been restored and is open to visitors. You can take a guided tour of the lift and then walk along the canal towpath, which offers views of the Cheshire countryside.

So there you have it, nine fantastic family walks in Cheshire.

So, pack a picnic, put on your walking shoes, and enjoy a day out in the great outdoors.
