Where is Kinder Scout?

Located approximately 30 miles southeast of Manchester and 15 miles west of Sheffield, Kinder Scout stands as a prominent landmark in the Derbyshire region of England.

Its proximity to major transport routes, including the A625 and A57 roads, as well as the Hope Valley railway line, makes it a popular destination for day trips and weekend getaways.

Geographically, Kinder Scout is situated within the High Peak area of Derbyshire, encompassing rugged moorlands, picturesque valleys, and ancient woodlands.

But, where is the summit of Kinder Scout?

From experience, I can say the official summit of Kinder Scout can be quite hard to find! You’ll find a prominent trig point at Kinder Low (633m), however the highest point of the Peak District, Kinder Scout (636m) can be found north-east of Kinder Low and is marked by an inconspicuous mound of grass and small cairn.

Most people are quite happy to take a selfie at Kinder Low and claim they’ve reached the highest point!


The Route.

  1. Begin your adventure from Edale station, continue through the village of Edale, passing the Moorland Centre on your right.

  2. Turn left onto the Pennine Way, opposite the Old Nag's Head pub, towards the heart of the Peak District.

  3. Follow the Pennine Way until you reach Upper Booth Farm, renowned for its habitat restoration efforts and scenic surroundings.

  4. As you stroll along the picturesque River Noe, admire the ancient clough woodland on your left, a testament to the area's rich ecological heritage.

  5. Cross the bridge over the River Noe then start your ascent up Jacob's Ladder, an ancient packhorse track steeped in history and offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

  6. Depart from the Pennine Way and veer right, skirting eastwards around Kinder Plateau. Marvel at the awe-inspiring rock formations, including the giant anvil-shaped rock known as Noe Stool, while witnessing ongoing conservation efforts to restore the eroded peatlands.

  7. Traverse the weathered gritstone rocks along Kinder Edges, passing by notable landmarks such as the Pagoda and the Wool Packs, before descending into the enchanting Grindsbrook valley.

  8. Enjoy sweeping views of the Vale of Edale as you descend from the plateau, taking in the intricate patterns of historic dry-stone walls and field boundaries. Follow the Grindsbrook footpath back to Edale village, concluding your journey with a sense of fulfillment and awe.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure parking spots and ensure a hassle-free experience.

Whatever you do, don’t do what I did - I arrived at the main car park at 10am. It was completely full, so I joined others and parked on the grass verge. After finishing our walk, I came back to a parking ticket. So do what I say, not what I do - arrive early and only park in a designated parking spot!
