Moel Famau Walking Routes
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve walked to the summit of Moel Famau.
This local peak is close to my heart for many reasons! It’s where I did the majority of my training for Kilimanjaro and it’s even where I did our little girl’s gender reveal.
It’s recognisable silhouette means home to me.
So, without further ado, here are my favourite walking routes up Moel Famau…

Moel Famau
Moel Famau is the highest point in the Clwydian Range. It is one of my favourite hikes in North Wales and is one of the most popular hiking spots in the region.
Standing at 555m tall, Moel Famau doesn’t quite make mountain status, but is a popular peak nonetheless.
As part of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you are guaranteed breathtaking views whilst exploring the many routes of Moel Famau.

Moel Famau Walking Routes
There are several walking routes to the top of Moel Famau, ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. Looking for the right OS Map? The Clwydian Range OS Map is the map for you!
Here are three of my favourite routes…
Moel Famau Lower Car Park Walk
Type: Out and Back (Circular Options)
Distance: 5.2 km
Duration: 2 Hours
The route from the bottom car park is the most popular and direct route to the summit of Moel Famau.
This route is relatively short, but it is steep (especially as you near the summit!) and requires a moderate level of fitness and appropriate footwear!
I’ve seen people walking up in heels. Don’t be that person.
The trail begins at the car park and follows a well-maintained path up through the forest.
As you ascend, the trees begin to thin, and the views of the surrounding hills start to reveal themselves.
Near the top, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging, but the effort is worth it once you reach the Jubilee Tower.
There is an option near the summit to take a left, which provides an easier route - and some great views!
Once you reach the top, take some time to enjoy the views and refuel, before returning the way you came up.
Be careful on the descent - the rocks can be loose.

Loggerheads to Moel Famau Circular Walk
Type: Circular
Distance: 13 km
Duration: 3-4 Hours
The Moel Famau from Loggerheads route is a slightly more challenging walk.
It is 13km long and will take you 3-4 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level.
The trail begins at Loggerheads Car Park and starts on country roads, following the Aber Eilun.
You then continue along a winding path up through the forest, before joining the main path to the summit of Moel Famau.
The return is just as scenic - descending through the forest before joining the Leete Path along the River Alyn and back to Loggerheads Car Park.
This route is much less crowded than the other routes up Moel Famau and offers more seclusion, allowing hikers to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of The Clwydian Range.

Moel Famau from Top Car Park Walk
Type: Out and Back
Distance: 5.5 km
Duration: 1.5 Hours
The route from the ‘Top Car Park’ is the easiest, and most popular, route to the summit of Moel Famau.
The car park is situated at the top of the hill, so you can avoid the initial steep climb.
This route follows a wide, well-maintained path up to the summit, making it suitable for those looking for a family friendly adventure.
The views from the start are truly breathtaking. And on a clear day, you can see across to Snowdonia National Park whilst making your way to the summit.
A great option for families or those looking for a gentler stroll!
